How to Be Your Dog’s “Alpha”
How to Be Your Dog’s “Alpha”
Yes, today I am miserable.
Life is good, no problems with the wife, dog is healthy, business is good, family is safe.
So why an I miserable?
Well my dog loving friends, it all has to do with a weed that grew into a huge elephant.
You see, I did everything that I could think of to keep that big bush from growing in our yard. We grow out tendrils, dig up the center, block off the part that fell over, killed the grass and made the place not look so nice.
But what I didn’t realize then was, I was letting my dog “dominate” me. And let him do so nasty.
I know that sounds terrible, but it’s true. If you let him dominate you, you will never be able to solve any of your problems later on.
I know this sounds silly, but I am just too busy trying to grow a critical mass of tolerance to see him as “my” dog. I know that sounds crazy to hear yourself say that, but you have to remember, dogs do not think the way we do.
It runs in the family. Ever heard this saying? “There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.” Oh sure that is an obvious thing, but I think most people with dogs think that that is an exception to the rule.
Anyway I am still trying to grow a critical mass of tolerance, so here are a few tips that have helped me.
Tip #1: Play with your dog. I mean really play with your dog. I know that this can be tough if your dog is a real meanie. If your dog likes to play fetch or tug-of-war or maybe even if he really likes to swim in the river or the lake let him. Just let your dog be your playmate.
How does that get rid of the “dominant” feeling? Well since your trying to grow a critical mass of tolerance you are going to begin to notice that your dog is not trying to assume the “dominant” position anymore.
Tip #2: Make sure your dog gets enough exercise. If you are going to make some adjustments to your dog’s behavior that will help with this, make them as exercise neutral as possible. And by that, I mean do not give your dog lift-overs for no reason.
Tip #3: If your dog gets a really good fright when you give him a water correction (a spray bottle or squirt gun) rather than reprimand him you need to think about just how you are making him look to you.
Tip #4: Get some chew toys. Not rawhide but real chew toys like Kongs. They are very good for you as a chewer because they can be stuffed with treats or food and keep your dog occupied for quite awhile.
Tip #5: If your dog is really good at getting your attention and using food as a “ammouse” he may not be interested in playing anymore. What you need to do is just ignore the dog. Really. Don’t look at him or talk to him and don’t correct him. Just go ahead and ignore him and eventually he will give up and leave you alone.
Tip #6: If your dog is really good at leaving you alone, you need to think about how you are selecting treats. Make sure you are giving your dog good food that is meant for dogs to chew.
Tip #7: If your dog is really good at leaving you alone AND he seems needy you can also just let him sleep in a crate as long as it is roomy enough for him to move away from you when he is “going” to his place.
About the only thing I don’t like about leaving my dogs alone is the fact that I have to get out of my chair and go into another room so I don’t have to hear his whining. However, the minute I return to my chair I am met with howling from Teespoon. He tries to “rowl” and act like his front legs are going to get sore pacing back and forth on my chair. It is just a reflex for him. If you don’t give attention to him for at least 5 minutes when you first leave, he will realize that when you leave you are not going to play with him.
If you are going to use the crate method of training this behavior, you will have to figure out how to transport him to and from his crate. The best way to make this happen is to get a big crate and make it into a safe place for him, kind of like his indoor dog house. Then you will have to find a way to make it easier for him than going outside. สล็อตเว็บตรง
